Market Potential

MTY’s product development program is directed to improve outcomes for patients suffering form common diseases such as heart failure, inflammatory diseases or cancer.

The Company aims to develop new drugs which could be used either as stand alone or co-therapy facilitating survival and quality of life for patients suffering from these conditions.

Heart Attack

Some 1.5 million people will suffer from acute myocardial infarct (or heart attack) this year in the US alone and approximately 30% of them will die. Indeed in Australia 48,000 people died from acute heart conditions in 2004[1], most of these preventable.

Current treatments focus on surgical procedures and medications that help the heart pump better and regulate blood pressure.  It is estimated that in addition to the cost of current treatments, the potential annual market for an effective new drug for heart attack is US$1.5B.

Stroke

The cost of treatments associated with stroke, including long term healthcare costs, reached around US$60 billion in 2007 in the United States. An effective new drug reducing brain damage could result in significant savings on the cost of rehabilitation and long term care of these patients.

In Australia the number of stroke events is estimated at 40,000-48,000.  The majority of these (approx 70%) are first-ever strokes although around 12,000 people who have previously had a stroke suffer an additional stroke every year.

Inflammatory conditions

Inflammatory conditions often require long term administration of drugs. Some of the current treatments are very effective but come with serious side effects; hence there is a need for safer alternatives.

Medical Therapies is aiming to develop new treatments with improved safety and reduced toxicity profile, which could represent several billion dollars in market potential.

Cancer and cancer diagnosis

Medical Therapies is focused on developing targeted co-therapies for certain cancers, particularly when patients develop chemotherapy resistance.   Aiming to identify early on the large number of patients who may develop resistance to therapy, alternative treatments could improve survival rates and quality of life.
